48 Hours in Newport News, VA

Travel doesn’t have to be more than 5 hours away, nor does it need to be longer than a weekend. Sometimes, a weekend adventure is all that it takes to renew your perspective and enthusiasm for life.

This weekend, I went to the Newport News area and enjoyed a rejuvenating change of scenery.

The Scenic James River

Saturday we spent half the day on the James – first enjoying an early dinner at James Landing Grille, which supports some beautiful views overlooking the James:

After eating, we took a scenic hike along the river.

Historic Yorktown

The second day, we took a day trip to historic Yorktown, which is a little historic town right on the York River. It has open beaches, little shops, and restaurants overlooking the water.

We hiked around the beaches, then ate at Riverwalk Landing, enjoying views of the York.

On the way back, we checked out the Yorktown Victory Monument, then took a scenic drive along the Colonial Parkway.

Thoroughly recommend both places for fellow travelers, particularly historic Yorktown and the Colonial Parkway.
